Chestnut Street will be closed 24 hours a day at the railroad intersection at Third Street next week from Thursday, May 1 through Saturday, May 3 for track upgrades.

All vehicle traffic will be detoured. The Amtrak Downeaster will maintain a limited schedule, and overnight freight trains will continue during closure.

The closure is part of an overall track upgrade between the Brunswick, Maine and Haverhill, Massachusetts train stations. Work includes replacing roughly 124,000 ties, adding 500 tons of ballast stone per track mile and resurfacing 124 miles of track. The Federal Railroad Administration awarded Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority and CSX a $27 million grant for the upgrades; CSX is funding the rest of the $35 million project.

The Central Avenue crossing will remain open during the Chestnut Street closure. It will be upgraded at a later date that has yet to be determined.
