Responsible lawn seeding and fertilizing

Being a good environmental neighbor includes proper lawn care, including selecting the right grass seed for the area, understanding nutrient needs, and applying fertilizer at the right times to minimize its' run off into Dover's rivers and streams, which empty into the Great Bay estuary.

The City of Dover in partnership with the University of New Hampshire's Cooperative extension created the video, Smart Lawns, Clean Water: Tips for Fertilizing and Seeding Responsibly, to help residents care for their lawns while protecting local waterways.

The video is part of the city's ongoing stormwater outreach efforts, featuring insights from City Engineer Ken Mavrogeorge and the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s Margaret Hagen. The video highlights best practices for lawn fertilization and seed selection. Viewers will learn how to read fertilizer labels, understand nutrient needs, conduct soil tests, and apply fertilizer at the right times to minimize runoff into Dover’s rivers and streams. The video also explores the benefits of selecting the right grass seed for local conditions, which can reduce water and fertilizer use.
