2026 State Primary Election

State Primary Election is Sept. 8, 2026

The state primary election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026. 

There are two separate ballots in a primary election: One for registered Republicans, and one for registered Democrats.

Winners of the primary election will be on the General Election ballot to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. 

Voters who are undeclared, and who wish to vote, can declare a party on the day of the primary and will receive that party's ballot. Voters can change party status back to undeclared by signing a form at the polls, following the vote. 

Supervisors of the Checklist in session Sept. 1

The Supervisors of the Checklist will be in session on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in the City Clerk’s office at Dover City Hall, 288 Central Ave.

During this session, supervisors will register new voters, record changes of address, and make other necessary corrections to the checklist. This is the last day for residents to register to vote before the Sept. 8, 2026 state primary election.

Application for State Election Absentee Ballot

Per state law, any person who will be absent on the day of any state election from the city, town, or unincorporated place in which he or she is registered to vote or who cannot appear in public on any election day because of his or her observance of a religious commitment or who is unable to vote there in person by reason of physical disability may vote via absentee ballot. A person who is unable to appear at any time during polling hours at his or her polling place because of an employment obligation may vote via absentee ballot, including care of children and infirm adults, with or without compensation.

To receive an absentee ballot, complete the Absentee Ballot Application and send it to the City Clerk's Office by mail, fax or hand delivery.

Absentee Ballot Status

After you have applied for an absentee ballot, you can use the Secretary of State's Voter Information Lookup to find out if your clerk has received your request, when the absentee ballot was sent to you, and when your clerk received your completed absentee ballot.
