The annual fireworks display on Sunday evening, July 4, launched from Garrison Hill this year, ended abruptly due to a malfunction. About 15 minutes into the display, one of the six-inch shells failed to launch completely and fell back to the ground, igniting other fireworks on the ground and causing an explosion. The fireworks display, conducted by Atlas PyroVision Entertainment Group of Jaffrey, was immediately halted for the safety of the fireworks crew. No one was injured.

Dover Fire and Rescue, already stationed at the site as a precaution, quickly extinguished the remaining fireworks racks on the ground. Dover Police also responded. The state Fire Marshal’s Office was notified of the incident.

Garrison Hill Park reopened this morning about 11:30 a.m.
