The Chestnut Street bridge over the Cochecho River is now open to traffic as of 8 a.m. today, Friday, April 28. COAST bus will resume its regular service on Chestnut Street this morning.

The bridge has been closed for rehabilitation since Jan. 3, 2023, and was scheduled to open by May 19, 2023. The project included removing the pavement, membrane, and sidewalks on the bridge, repairing deteriorated concrete in the bridge deck, reconstructing the bridge sidewalks, and installing a new bridge membrane, new bridge pavement, and new wearing-course pavement.

This week, crews completed paving, lane striping, and general cleanup. The contractor will complete minor punch-list items in the near future, which may require intermittent lane shifts or road closures to complete. Additional sidewalk work on both sides of the bridge is expected later in conjunction with private utility work. This area is outside the work limits and scope of the current project.

In addition to being completed ahead of schedule, the project is under the budget allocated by City Council in late 2022.
