With the spring bloom in full effect, the city reminds property owners to trim vegetation on their land that extend into public roads and sidewalks. Failure to do so may result in city enforcement, as it it’s against city code for vegetation to encroach into the public way.
Trees and plants on private property must not obstruct traffic sight lines or sidewalks. They must also not block streetlights or create any public hazard. The minimum vegetation clearance is 10 feet above sidewalks, 12 feet above most public streets, and 16 feet above truck thoroughfare routes. See chapters 125-17 and 133-6 for complete requirements.
If a property owner fails to maintain their trees or shrubs, the city will issue a written notice requiring them to prune or remove the plants. If the vegetation is still not pruned, it is lawful for the city to complete the work and charge the property owner for the cost.
The public may report vegetation obstructions using the online Service Request Portal. It allows the user to enter an issue category, location, and description of the issue, which then creates a digital work order.
