Fire RecognitionDuring this week's City Council meeting on Jan. 9, 2019, the Council and City Manager J. Michael Joyal, Jr. congratulated members of Dover Fire and Rescue and the Police Department for recent special recognition by the New Hampshire Fire and Emergency Medical Services Committee of Merit.

Several members of the police and fire departments attended the meeting to be recognized for their efforts during three emergency events.

"I'm pleased to say our staff is recognized for their professionalism, their valor, in protecting the public and making sure there are good outcomes in these incidents," Joyal said at the meeting.

"You make Dover proud," added Mayor Karen Weston.

At an awards ceremony in September, Dover Fire and Rescue and Dover Police were honored for their response to the three incidents.

At an awards ceremony in September, Dover Fire and Rescue and Dover Police were honored for their response to the three incidents.

Dover Fire Capt. Chris Jacques was awarded a Class 3 Medal of Valor for his response to a motorcycle accident in October 2017. Jacques put himself at risk on the busy highway to tend to the critically injured motorcyclist, who later recovered from the injuries.

In November 2017, police and fire personnel responded to the General Sullivan Bridge where a suicidal subject was preparing to jump from the middle of the bridge. After a long negotiation with Dover Police Officer Jules Cooper, Dover Firefighter and Advanced EMT David Camire was lowered by rope to the bridge abutment to assist the subject. The subject was harnessed into a rope rescue system set up by emergency personnel and rescued from the bridge. Camire received a Class 2 Medal of Valor award for his efforts. In addition, unit citations were also awarded to Unit Citations were awarded to Police Officer Jules Cooper; Police Capt. Brad Gould; Police Chief Bill Breault; Fire Capt. Craig Chabot; Firefighter and Paramedic Anthony Colarusso; Firefighter and Paramedic Robert Downs; Fire Division Chief Michael Drouinl; Fire Lt. David Golding; Deputy Fire Chief Paul Haas; Engineer and Paramedic Josh Hoffman; Firefighter and Paramedic Hunter Holt; Engineer and Paramedic Brian Jacques; Engineer and Advanced EMT Scott Orringer; Firefighter and Paramedic Benjamin Roesch; Firefighter and Paramedic Patrick Simmons; Fire Lt. Dale Spainhower; Firefighter and Paramedic Stephen Thurnstrom; and Fire Chief Eric Hagman.

In December 2017, police and fire personnel battled a blaze at Edgar Bois Terrace, a multi-unit apartment complex, in sub-zero weather. In addition to controlling the fire, crews helped residents evacuate. The evacuation was particularly challenging because many residents did not want to leave the building. For their efforts, unit citations were awarded to Police Sgt. Linda Anderson; Police Officer Matthew Brown; Police Officer Matthew Harnish; Police Officer Ronald Letendre; Police Officer Alexander Mitrushi; Fire Engineer and Paramedic Matt Adams; Firefighter and Paramedic Ryan Chase; Firefighter and Advanced EMT David Corcoran; Fire Lt. Shawn Croteau; Firefighter and Paramedic Robert Downs; Fire Lt. David Golding; Fire Lt. Shawn Croteau; Firefighter and Paramedic Josh Hoffman; Firefighter and Paramedic Hunter Holt; Fire Capt. Chris Jacques; Firefighter and Paramedic Robert Downs; Fire Engineer and Advanced EMT Beth Mason; Firefighter and Advanced EMT Jeff Nelson; Firefighter and Paramedic Benjamin Roesch; Fire Division Chief Dale Spainhower; and Firefighter and Paramedic Stephen Thurnstrom.
