The School Board will hold a special meeting week on Wednesday, Nov. 1, to consider an appeal from a Dover resident regarding whether a book should continue to be available for students at the high school library.
The appeal, made by resident Julie Porter, follows Superintendent William Harbron's denial of her initial request to have the book "Boy Toy" by Barry Lygra removed, alleging the material was acquired with public funds in violation of the law. She alleges the book promotes pedophilia and sexual assault of a minor, according to agenda background materials.
As per School Board policy KEC, Harbron asked a staff committee to review the book. Assistant Superintendent Christine Boston, who chaired the committee, said they unanimously recommended keeping the book in place as "removing this book would prevent access to ideas, viewpoints and opinions for all students based on the opinions of some." Harbron agreed with and adopted the staff committee’s report, after which the appeal to the School Board followed.

As per KEC policy, if the person's initial request is denied, they may appeal to the School Board, whose decision is final.
