A new state law that took effect on Sept. 1, 2023, will assess an annual surcharge on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations to offset lost gas tax revenue.

Under New Hampshire House Bill 2, signed into law by Gov. Chris Sununu on June 6, battery electric vehicles will be charged an additional $100, while plug-in hybrids will be charged an additional $50. The fees will be prorated for new vehicles and transfers of registration.

Residents of Dover who previously received renewal letters earlier in August or already mailed in payment will be notified separately about the additional surcharge.
