Dover fountainA new fountain donated by City Councilor Anthony McManus is now active, a soothing addition to the Joe B. Parks Riverwalk and Public Gardens. The fountain was installed in the Cocheco River, directly adjacent to the public gardens and Central Avenue bridge.

During the fountain’s inaugural run, McManus said his donation was buoyed by the support of neighboring business and property owners and the City of Dover’s Community Services Department.

Dr. Robert Karelitz, who owns the building adjacent to the public gardens and operates a dentistry services business, agreed to allow the fountain to tap into his electrical system. Realtor Peggy Carter, co-owner of Coldwell Banker, Peggy Carter Team, offered to pay for the electricity to power the fountain’s pump.

After receiving the required permits from the state Department of Environmental Services and Fish and Game, Community Services recently installed the fountain, which McManus purchased last year.

According to Dover City Manager J. Michael Joyal, Jr., the fountain is the direct result of Councilor McManus’ generosity and persistent efforts to provide a beautiful backdrop for all to enjoy.

The fountain operates daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Joyal said Community Services will remove the fountain later in the fall and move it into storage for the winter. Crews will reinstall the fountain in the spring.
