Community Services started sidewalk reconstruction work on Rutland Street last week, commencing the annual sidewalk improvements slated for the 2021 construction season.

Each year, the Community Services Department creates a list of sidewalks considered to be a high priority for upgrades. The sidewalks selected for upgrades are designed by Community Services’ Engineering Division. After a competitive bid process, the City Council on April 14 awarded the sidewalk improvements bid to John H. Lyman & Sons, Inc., of Gilford for $451,000.

Over the coming months, the contractor is slated to reconstruct the sidewalks at the following locations:

Community Services started sidewalk reconstruction work on Rutland Street last week, commencing the annual sidewalk improvements slated for the 2021 construction season.

Each year, the Community Services Department creates a list of sidewalks considered to be a high priority for upgrades. The sidewalks selected for upgrades are designed by Community Services’ Engineering Division. After a competitive bid process, the City Council on April 14 awarded the sidewalk improvements bid to John H. Lyman & Sons, Inc., of Gilford for $451,000.

Over the coming months, the contractor is slated to reconstruct the sidewalks at the following locations:

  • The western side of Central Avenue, between Planet Fitness and Walgreens
  • The southern side of Washington Street, between Arch Street and Cushing Street
  • The southern side of Hough Street, between Mt. Vernon Street and Central Avenue
    The western side of Central Avenue, between Rutland Street and Dunkin’/Dover Emergency Room
  • The eastern side of Rutland Street, from Fisher Street to Silver Street
  • The western side of Rutland Street, from Parker Street to Silver Street.

New pedestrian street-crossing infrastructure is also planned, including:

  • A pedestrian refuge island in Central Avenue at the intersection of Fifth Street
  • A new concrete landing pad in front of Subway/Burger King restaurant on Central Avenue at the existing crosswalk.

Residents should anticipate construction activities in the above areas that may result in increased noise, dust and traffic impacts.

The contractor’s tentative schedule, which may change depending on weather and other conditions, is as follows:

June 1 to 18:

  • Rutland Street (east side) from Parker Street to Silver Street
  • Rutland Street (west side) from Fisher Street to Silver Street

June 14 to 21:

  • Central Avenue (east side) from Rutland Street to Dunkin'/Dover Emergency Room
  • Sidewalk landing pad at the traffic signal by Subway/Burger King on Central Avenue

June 15 to 30:

  • Hough Street (south side) from Mt. Vernon to Central Avenue

June 24 to July 9:

  • Central Avenue (east side) from Planet Fitness to Walgreens

July 1 to July 7:

  • Pedestrian refuge island on Central Avenue at the intersection of Fifth Street

July 7 to July 20:

  • Washington Street (south side) from Cushing to Arch
