Dover Elks Lodge to host Flag Day ceremony June 14

Dover Elks Lodge #184 will host a Flag Day ceremony on Wednesday, June 14, at 6 p.m., at the Rotary Arts Pavilion, Henry Law Park.

Over 105 years ago, members of the Elks Grand Lodge decided to hold a ceremony to honor the American flag. By a resolution, they designated June 14 as Flag Day and in 1911 adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge. That requirement continues today.

With the effort and urging of the Elks, President Harry S. Truman, a member of the Elks himself, in 1949 officially designated June 14 Flag Day and an observance for all Americans.

Everyone, young and old, is invited to join the officers and members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Dover Lodge #184 on Tuesday evening, June 14, at for the annual Flag Day ceremony honoring the American flag.

Mayor Karen Weston will be the keynote speaker, as well as Stone Slattery Troop Leader from Boy Scout troop #173. Cub Scout packs #173 and 195 will assist PER Paul Vatcher with the history and parade of the flags, and a flag folding ceremony explaining the meaning of each fold.
