George Foster

George J. Foster, the eldest son of Joshua and Lucretia (Gale) Foster, was born in Concord, NH on Feb. 13, 1854. He was educated in the public schools of Portsmouth and when his father started the papers in Dover he became the business manager. George married Anna C. Clark, the daughter of Seth and Clarissa Clark of Dover on July 22, 1880. They live at 4 Hough Street and had three children:                 Bertha F. born Aug. 3, 1883 – married Harry C. Glidden                 Arthur born March 27, 1885 – worked at the paper in circulation                 Frederick born Dec. 9, 1887 – became the third publisher of Foster’s Daily Democrat in 1928.

George J. Foster served on the school committee for 27 years (1882 – 1909) and was chairman for six years. He served as mayor of Dover in 1906, 1909 & 1910 He was elected to the N.H. House of Representatives in 1893 and to the state senate in 1927. A member of St. John’s Methodist Church he was also a trustee of the Wentworth Home for the Aged, the Strafford Savings Bank, Wentworth Hospital, Dover Public Library and Pine Hill Cemetery. He died June 21, 1928. His wife Anna died April 6, 1922.
