Fred Smalley

Fred Smalley was born in Shrewsbury, Vt. on Nov. 18, 1866, the son of Christopher and Virginia (Guard) Smalley.

Mr. Smalley came to Dover in 1898. He took over the marble and granite business of Solomon Foye after Mr. Foye’s death in 1905.

The family lived at 62 Belknap Street. Fred Smalley served as a councilman in 1911 & 1912, as an alderman in 1913 & 1914 and as mayor in 1918 & 1919. He was a state representative in 1915 & 1916.

Mr. Smalley was married twice. First to Grace M. Hanson, the daughter of Lewis B. and Betsy (Thurston) Hanson. They had five children:

After his first wife, Grace, died March 28, 1916, he married Mabelle P. Weeks, the daughter of John Porter Weeks of Bayside Farm. Mr. Smalley died on Feb. 2, 1942 and his wife Mabelle died Oct. 26, 1945.
