With hot and humid weather in the forecast over the next few days, the City of Dover has opened a cooling center to provide relief from the weather. The cooling center is located in the McConnell Center cafeteria and will be open during regular hours at the McConnell Center: today through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Those seeking to use the cooling center should enter the McConnell Center through Door #2 or #7. If unsure how to find the cafeteria, use Door #3 and check in at the Recreation Department front desk for directions.

The Jenny Thompson Outdoor Pool is also open this week. Public swimming hours are Monday through Friday, 12 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m.

As the hot and humid weather continues this week, Fire Chief Richard Driscoll reminds residents to check on elderly neighbors.

As the hot and humid weather continues this week, Fire Chief Richard Driscoll reminds residents to check on elderly neighbors.

“Because the elderly are at a higher risk for heat-related health issues, it's important to check on our elderly neighbors to ensure they’re safe,” Driscoll said.

Driscoll also said residents can beat the heat by staying indoors if possible during the hottest part of the day, wearing light-colored clothing while outside, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. The combination of heat and high humidity can put people at risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Care of pets is also important throughout this weather. Make sure pets have plenty of water to drink and are not left unattended in vehicles, where the temperature can reach 120 degrees quickly.

In addition, Dover Fire and Rescue reminds residents to use caution with air conditioners.

“Air conditioners consume a lot of power and should not be connected to ordinary extension cords,” Driscoll said, adding only heavy duty appliance cords should be used. “It’s important to make sure your electrical system is designed to handle the additional power loads from air conditioners and fans.”
