Dispatcher John Nelson

John Nelson is a twelve year veteran of the Dover Police Department. Since joining the Department, Dispatcher Nelson has shown himself to go above and beyond his normal duties in dispatch.

In one nomination letter received by the Awards Committee, Dispatcher Nelson was commended by a co-worker for going “far beyond the scope of his job” and going “above and beyond to assist the department”. The employee who made these comments went on to say that Dispatcher Nelson spent hours recently, over the span of several days, trying to find phone numbers for various cell phone companies in an effort to trace a missing and suicidal subject. This was something Dispatcher Nelson did without having to be asked. Additionally, during a severe snow storm this past winter, Dispatcher Nelson not only bought snow shovels and brought them in, but also shoveled the front walkway himself so people could get into the station.

In another nomination letter received by the Committee, Dispatcher Nelson was commended for the extra work he puts in that is not widely known throughout the department. In one recent case, Dispatcher Nelson was able to locate a missing juvenile from Mechanic Falls, Maine who had taken her step-father’s car and had driven to Dover (the girl was 13). By Dispatcher Nelson’s “persistence and coordination with E911, he was able to track the girl to Polly Ann Park where she was located.” Dispatcher Nelson has obtained latitude/longitude locations in order to trace individuals’ locations via the internet. In most of these cases, Dispatcher Nelson does this on his own to assist the investigating officer in bringing a successful resolution to cases.

Additionally, John was commended for doing such things in the dispatch center as repairing broken equipment, and moving telephone wires for the fax machines so they could be placed in a better location for ease of use. This helped to keep costs down and equipment in use, rather than out for repair.
