Renewal fees are always based on 12 months. Renewal registrations are not prorated regardless of how long the vehicle was in use. You must present your current registration or City of Dover renewal notice.
If you have previously registered a vehicle in the City of Dover a renewal notice will be sent to that address. If you have moved, the renewal notice will be returned to the office where the registration will then be flagged. Proof of residency will be required to renew the vehicle. New residents must provide a current registration and proof of residency.
There are three ways to Renew your Motor Vehicle Registration in the City of Dover.
1. In person at the City Clerk/Tax Collectors Office
2. Through the mail - please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.
3. Online - the link is on the Home Page (E-transactions).
If coming into the office, the original registration or renewal notice must be presented to renew the registration. We only accept cash or checks.
One check made payable to the City of Dover covers both the City and State portions. Please include your phone number on both checks.
If you do not have your registration or renewal notice, a duplicate can be purchased for $18.00. Your name must be on the registration and proper ID is required to purchase a duplicate.
Pursuant to NH RSA 261:148 when renewing a registration you are required by law to present either a current registration or renewal notice.
If renewing through the mail, please allow 10 to 15 days for processing. Please send you check with the lower half of your renewal notice. If you want to save the $3.00 agent fee and get your stickers at the DMV, please deduct $3.00 from the City portion for each registration. When you receive the registration in the mail, you must bring or mail it to the DMV to validate it and receive the stickers for your plates.
If renewing online you must have a checking account from where the payment will be deducted. When you have completed the online payment, the registration will be processed and mailed the next business day. If you have moved, you must come into the office and show proof of your residency before your registration can be updated and processed.
