3D Printer

The Dover Public Library shares an Ultimaker 2 Go with 13 other libraries in NH.  We will have the printer occasionally for a couple weeks at a time.

A 3D printer melts a material and places small dots of the material in a layer.  It builds up an object one layer at a time.  This lets it create any shape.

Sometimes it needs to build supports to hold up a piece while it is building the rest of the object.  These supports are removed when the object is finished.

Often the interior of the object is not solid – this saves material and makes the object lighter.  In this case, the interior contains a grid of material that will support the top of the object.

We are using PLA (Polylactic Acid) for our material, it is a bio-plastic that is made from (mostly) corn.

Request your own 3D printed object

The Dover Public Library can print an object for you with the 3D printer. There is a small cost for materials (5 cents per gram). Most objects cost less than $2.

Objects cannot be larger than 4 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 5 inches tall. No object will be printed that takes more than 6 hours to print. .STL files that create objects that are too big can be reduced in size to fit within these parameters.

First, choose an object from Thingiverse.com (or some other site that provides .STL files for 3D objects), or create your own with TinkerCad or similar software.

Then send the following information in an email to p.thrasher@dover.nh.gov:

  1. An .STL file or the URL where the files are located
  2. Choose Blue or Silver color (we will have more colors in the future)
  3. Specify whether the exact size of the object matters (can I make it smaller if needed?)
  4. The maximum amount you are willing to pay for the object.
  5. Do you want to watch your object being printed (subject to your schedule and mine)

We will schedule your object on a first come first served basis and notify you via email when your object is ready for pickup. We will contact you if there is a problem with your request.

The 3D printer will be here until September 9, 2017, and then again from October 2 - October 14, 2017
